Book Club Expectations at The Pile Bookstore

Thank you for joining our book clubs! We want everyone to feel included, comfortable, and safe while attending the book club(s) of their choice and have put together the following expectations with that in mind. By attending book club meetings, you agree to abide by these expectations:

  1. All members are expected to have read the book prior to the meeting, as discussions are much more meaningful and productive when everyone has read the selection.

  1. While we are happy to offer a discount if you choose to purchase the book from The Pile, it is not required that you buy a copy from the store. If access to the book is a hurdle, please seek out the moderator for assistance in finding resources.

  1. Members will allow everyone the chance to speak and participate during book club. All participants may speak as much or as little as they choose.

  1. Discussion is expected to stay on the topic of the book. Conversations that veer off topic or become too personal will be steered back to the book selected for the meeting.

  1. Everyone is expected to respect other members in the group and the moderator, regardless of race, gender/gender identity, sexual orientation, age, etc. Anyone who threatens, harasses, or otherwise disrespects another member of the group will be immediately asked to leave the book club. Slurs of any kind will not be tolerated in the bookstore at any time.

If these expectations cannot be met, a member may be asked to no longer participate. Each expectation not met will be addressed individually depending on the severity of the occurrence. If a member feels uncomfortable at any time during book club, please reach out to info@thepilebookstore.com with your concerns.

Thank you for your commitment to creating an inclusive and welcoming space for everyone in our book clubs!

Local Author Submissions to The Pile Bookstore

CONGRATULATIONS to all of our local self-published/small press authors! Getting your book out into the world is a great accomplishment, and we have a section just for you to show off your work. If you would like to have your book carried on these shelves, please see below for more information.

  • We review all submissions for our Local Authors Section. To be considered, please provide us with either a print or digital copy of your book. Once we have reviewed your work, we will be in touch with how we would like to proceed. Please note that this review may take several weeks, possibly more depending on the time of year.

  • The Pile Bookstore can either order books through Ingram or directly from the author. If your book is published by a small press that offers direct ordering, please send us the details on who to contact to establish an account and order.

    • If ordering directly from the author, the bookstore pays all authors the standard 60% of list price for their books. If that will not cover your costs, we will discuss further whether we change the payment structure, list price, or percentage on an individual basis.

    • Payment can be made on commission or at time of delivery by the author. The best method for both parties will be determined after review by the store.

  • The Pile Bookstore is happy to host signing or other events in the store. Please see our Event guidelines for general information, and note the following specific for authors:

    • If providing your own books to sell, all sales must go through the store register. At the end of the event, the store will pay out the standard 60% of all sales to the author.

  • Please know that while we would like to support all of our local authors, we have limited shelf space. If we choose not to stock your book, it is not a reflection on the author personally, but on how many books in the same genre we are currently stocking, the current demand of the book’s genre in the store at the moment, etc.

All questions and concerns can be directed to info@thepilebookstore.com. Thank you for your support!

Events at The Pile Bookstore

Thank you for considering The Pile Bookstore to host your event! Please take a moment to review the following guidelines to ensure that we are a good fit for your needs. For any book clubs looking for a place to hold meetings, please see our guidelines on outside book clubs.

  • The Pile Bookstore does not host political or campaign events. All other types of events must be submitted as a request to info@thepilebookstore.com. Please be sure to include requested date(s) and time(s), a brief description of the event, the intended audience, and an estimated number of attendees if applicable.

  • Events hosted during normal business hours are free of charge. Any events hosted outside of business hours or requiring that the business close for a private party are subject to one of the following fee structures, dependent on the type of event and determined by The Pile Bookstore:

    • A flat fee of $50/hour to cover staff, utilities, and space rental, divisible by half hour.

    • A minimum spend amount for customers requesting a private shopping experience, to be determined by the amount of time and people requested.

    • The flat rental fee will be collected at time of scheduling to reserve the date for your event. Cancellations received more than 72 hours in advance of the reserved date will be refunded in full. Cancellations received 24-72 hours before the date will be eligible to reschedule at no additional cost; no refunds will be issued, limit three reschedules per deposit. No-shows and cancellations received within 24 hours of the date forfeit the rental fee to The Pile Bookstore and will not be eligible for refunds or reschedules. If The Pile Bookstore cancels at any time, the event planner will be given the option to reschedule at no fee or receive a full refund.

  • The Pile Bookstore will post the event on their monthly calendar, website, and Facebook event page unless requested not to. Any graphics or descriptions the host would like included should be submitted once the event and date are confirmed. The host is welcome and encouraged to promote the event through whatever channels they prefer.

  • The Pile Bookstore will have snacks and beverages available for purchase during the event. No outside food and/or beverages are permitted unless expressly discussed with and allowed by The Pile Bookstore. Given enough notice, the store will make a concerted effort to provide snacks available for purchase for specific dietary restrictions.

  • Anyone hosting or attending an event in The Pile Bookstore is expected to respect other customers and staff members in the space, regardless of race, gender/gender identity, sexual orientation, age, etc. Anyone who threatens, harasses, or otherwise disrespects staff members or other attendees / customers will be immediately asked to leave the store. Slurs of any kind will not be tolerated in the bookstore at any time.
